Description:The miner shown working here is back ripping a roadway, this was necessary when the weight from above or the sides crushed a roadway, in order to keep it open it would have to be enlarged by ripping the roof and sides. If the floor lifted the what was know as "Baiting" was done the floor was dug up to lower the level by what ever depth was necessary.
