Description:Token coinage used at St. Edward's Hospital, Cheddleton by patients. They could be used like standard currency in exchange for goods and services on the hospital site. The ten 10 tokens include a halfpenny, 1d., 2d., 3d., 5d., 6d., 1s.,2s., and 4s. At the top is a token which was given to patients allowed to leave the hospital site on day release to indicate that they had been given permission to go out.

Cheddleton Asylum was built as a County Mental Hospital by Giles, Gough & Trollope in 1895-1899. The advent of the National Health Service in 1948 saw the Hospital renamed St. Edward’s. Demolition of the Hospital began in late 1990s and the Hospital finally closed in 2002. The grounds are now occupied by a housing development.
