Description:This ancient oak tree, one of a number which formerly stood in Needwood Forest, stood close to Swilcar Lawn Farm near Marchington. It was believed to be over 700 years old when it was uprooted in a storm on 12 July 1941. When it was measured in 1905 it had a girth of 25 feet at five feet from the ground and a height of over 60 feet. The Swilcar Lawn Oak was celebrated in verse in F.N.C. Mundy's poem 'Needwood Forest' and by Erasmus Darwin in 1809.
