Description:Photograph of Mayor's Sergeant Leslie D Martin MBTC Sc. retired Apirl 1985.

The first mention of Mayor's Sergeant is in the Royal Charter of the Borough granted by Queen Elizabeth I in 1590.
It states:
"The Mayor's Serjeant, to do all things which to do the office of serjeant appertain and that the person elected may carry a mace engraven with our arms....shall serve for the making and carrying out of proclamations, arrests, processes, executions and all other matters pertaining to the office within the said Borough and the limits, boundaries and precints of the same, in like manner and form as serjeants at mace in our City of London do and execute"

Today the role is mainly ceremonial, (they are no longer expected to execute anyone!); and includes walking in front of the Mayor carrying a ‘Mace’.
The Mace is an emblem of authority and its appearance indicates that the Mayor is acting in his or her, official capacity.
The Mace is a symbol of the Royal authority given by the Sovereign to the Mayor.
