Description:The "Tackeroo" railway was originally sent up Brindley Heath Road which was found to be too steep and therefore had to be diverted left up Brindley Valley which had less of a gradient. It entered what is now called Duffields car park and headed for the area close to the White House following the natural valley bed. Interestingly, the photograph shows quite a large pre-war plantation of conifer trees, one of the very few on the Chase at the time. The route of the military railway can still be traced on Ordnance Survey maps and more clearly on the recent LiDAR Survey of Cannock Chase carried out as part of a Heritage Lottery Fund Project by Staffordshire County Council.
