Description:Henry Cyril Paget, 5th Marquis of Anglesey (1875-1905). Educated at Eton College, Henry Paget succeeded to his father's estates in 1898 shortly after his marriage to his cousin Lilian. The Marquis was a flamboyant character, obsessed with the theatre, and spent enormous amounts of money following his passion and purchasing elaborate and expensive costumes. He converted the Chapel at Plas Newydd, Anglesey into a 150 seat theatre, 'The Gaiety' and toured Europe for three yrars with his theatre troupe. His marriage was dissolved in 1900.
By 1904 he had amassed debts of £540,000; an enormous sum. A great sale at Plas Newydd followed, and these debts played a part in the eventual sale of the Pagets' Staffordshire home, Beaudesert. The Marquis left for the continent but died at the age of 29 in the Hotel Royale, Monte Carlo.
