Description:On the outskirts of Rugeley, Etching Hill is a well-known viewpoint on the north-eastern edge of Cannock Chase and has a distinctive, flat sandstone top.

In 1873 Army Manoeuvres were held on Cannock Chase. General Lysons' headquarters were situated at the base of the hill. By this time the a hollowed area at the bottom of the hill (on the Mount Road side) was used as the butts of rifle ranges. The Butts are remembered in the names of a local street and farm.
