Description:Tom Coulthwaite's stables are the red-roofed buildings in the left middle distance in this colour-tinted postcard view taken from Hednesford Hills, near the present day Raceway. They have since been demolished and replaced with houses
The nearest house on Rawnsley Road near the junction with Rugeley Road still stands, but the rail crossing keeper's house beyond no longer exists. The mineral line transported men and coal from Cannock Wood Colliery (seen in the distance) to the main rail system at Hednesford. In front of the colliery can be seen streets of terraced miners' housing at Hazel Slade which have since been demolished.
Tom Coulthwaite came to Hazel Slade around 1900. He trained three Grand National winners: Eremon in 1907; Jenkinstown in 1910; and Grakle in 1931. Tom was a friend of the Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) who visited his training ground.
