Description:This 'Greetings from Cannock' postcard has a highly decorated embossed border surrounding a picture of an embroidered design The design has a a red shield bearing a tree above crossed pick and shovel, probably alluding to Cannock's coal mining heritage, all surrounded by forget-me-nots. It is addressed to Sapper T .A. Upton, Royal Engineers, who was in a Nottingham hospital in 1918. A native of Walsall, his 'Roll of Honour' entry records that he was a tunneller, mining under enemy trenches. He was wounded in October 1918 and it is likely that this card was sent during his convalescence. He lived until 1953 and had his own milk and greengrocery business near Walsall. The card was made in Switzerland.
