Date:February 1916

Description:A bandsman of the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment pictured outside a hut at Brocton Camp. This young man is proud to send home his portrait in full bandsman uniform and is informing his mother, Mrs G. Silcock, that he is on his way to Brocton Camp from Whittington Barracks. It is dated 22 Februatry 1916, it is more than likely he would have gone abroad.

He is believed to be Herbert John Silcock. Born in Denstone in 1889, the 1911 census lists him as living with his mother Mary Ann Silcock (widow of George Silcock, farmer) at the Armitage, Denstone, near Rocester. At the time of the census he was employed as a chemist's assistant. By the end of the war he was a Gunner with the Royal Garrison Artillery. He died in 1973 and is buried in Denstone churchyard.
