The photograph was taken on the lawns of Spode House at Hawkesyard Priory, Rugeley, during a scene representing Three Elements, Light, Earth and Trees, from Act 1 of “The Pageant of Martinmas” by Fr. Conrad Pepler, O.P., a Dominican priest, writer, editor, and publisher and who was responsible for setting up the first Roman Catholic conference centre in the UK, at Spode House, Hawkesyard Priory.

It was reported in the Rugeley Times newspaper that this was the fifth annual Pageant produced by Marjorie Leech and the weather was favourable for an audience of several hundreds who attended the Pageant from as far as Leeds, Leicester, Salford, and the Stafford and Rugeley areas.

The Feast of St Martin or Martinmas, a Christian feast commemorating the death and burial of the 4th century St Martin of Tours is held on 11 November. Since 1918 this date is also known as Armistice Day.
