Description:Originally known as No.1 The Village, the house was built in the mid-19th century. Helen, Lady Salt moved here in 1904 after the death of her husband, Sir Thomas Salt MP. She renamed it 'Walton-on-the-Hill'. It had previously been tenanted by Col. James A. Fairhurst, a barrister. Helen Salt moved out in 1920 and Miss Ellen Jane Brace lived there until her death in 1931. It was then acquired by Mr Surtees Walker who converted the property into six flats in the mid 1930s. The property did not have mains electricity until the early 1950s, although electric light was provided from a gas generator and battery room. The building was later inherited by Mr. Walker’s daughter Joan Pickering and the property sold to developers. The house was demolished in 1972 and replaced with the Village Gardens cul de sac. The roof of the coach house can just be seen in the background on the far left; this now forms part of No. 4 Village Gardens, which is the first house on the left along the modern cul-de-sac.
