Date:1870 - 1890 (c.)

Description:This Private Omnibus for a single horse belonged to the 2oth Earl of Shrewsbury and Talbot of Ingestre Hall. It was built by Holmes of Derby and London in the late 19th century, although the wagonette body may be a later addition. The upholstery and much of the paintwork appears to have been replaced during the 1950s or 1960s.

The Private Omnibus came into use in the late 1860s. It was a very versatile carriage, and was often seen as indispensable on large country estates. It was used for carrying passengers to and from railway stations, and for any social driving when a large number of passengers needed to be carried.

This horse-drawn carriage is from the Staffordshire County Museum collection. You can find out more about the Single Omnibus and see 3D imaging that you can rotate and zoom in to explore detail at the Staffordshire Carriage Collection website: http://www.staffordshirecarriages.org.uk/single-private-omnibus-2/
