Description:The Unicorn works on Amicable Street (now Butterfield Place) and Scotia Road date from the 1850s and had passed through a number of hands before becoming part of Johnson Brothers (Hanley) Ltd in 1956. Podmore & Walker, Enoch Wedgwood and Hollinshead & Kirkham have all occupied the pottery. Durng the 19th century the works employed over 600 people producing higher class domestic and export earthenware. The building in the photograph dates from the 1890 rebuild.
