Description:Joseph Richard Hindley's bakers shop at 16a Upper Brook Street. Joseph Hindley acquired this premises in 1896 from an existing small bakery business for a little 0ver £45 including stock, equipment and goodwill. Delivering by horse and cart, his first day's sales came to £1-8s-6d (£1.42). Upon his death in 1928 his son Gilbert took over the business; London trained and gold medal and prize winner nationally. Hindley's reputation grew and at their peak they had shops in 18 towns across the Midlands. By the 1960s they had built a new modern bakery at Wharf Road, Rugeley. In 2003 the company decided, due to changing shopping habits, to reduce the number of shops, baking in house. The fourth generation family-run business is now (2019) based at Lichfield with a second shop in Birmingham.
