Description:Percy Buckley is pictured by Stafford Common Signal Box wearing his uniform on the day he retired from British Railways after 51 years’ service. His final job with BR was as Yard Foreman at Stafford Common. On the left is Mr Atkinson, Station Manager at Stafford and on the right is thought to be Mr Seddon, Yard Master at Stafford.

Stafford Common Railway Station was built in 1867, to serve the Stafford to Uttoxeter line. The station closed to passengers in 1939, but continued to carry freight. It closed completely in the 1970s.

Thank you to David Buckley (Percy’s son) and Mr Chris Coates for providing this photograph. David and his father Percy were from a railway family along with David’s grandfather and uncles who had worked for various railways including LMS, NSR and BR.
