Description:The remains of the top portion of the old south transept entrance arch re-erected in the garden of Doxey House, near Stafford. These architectural fragments were removed from St. Mary's Church, Stafford during its restoration by Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1840-1844.
The Collegiate Church of St. Mary is the parish church of Stafford. The present building is a mixture of genuine medieval and the work of Sir George Gilbert Scott, who restored the church in 1841-1844 in what he imagined to be its original style. The octagonal tower of the church was once crowned with a spire which fell during a storm in 1593. This photograph was taken by local historian Mr S.A. Cutlack of Gnosall.
