Date:1600 - 1800 (c.)

Description:This unshaped boulder of sandstone with an iron ring embedded in top was sunk into ground so only the top and ring were above ground. It was sunk into an elliptical depression, approximately 60 feet across and 8 feet deep at Cellarhead, Werrington, Stoke-on-Trent. It was sited in the south-east sector of Cellarhead crossroads and dates from the 17th or 18th century. Bulls were tethered to the ring, spectators sat on the banks and baited the bull with terriers. The site has since been obliterated by changes to the road system.

The bullbaiting ring and stone is now part of the Staffordshire County Museum collection and is seen here outside the Brewhouse at Shugborough.
