Description:Locomotive no. 58A 0-6-0ST was built in Stoke Works in 1881. Originally numbered 58, it was renumbered 58A in 1899. This photo was probably taken just after renumbering. In 1923 it was again renumbered as LMS no. 1600. The man on the footplate is John Whalley, the image donor's great grandfather, who worked for the North Staffordshire Railway for many years as a fireman, driver and then shed foreman. He lived at Alsager.
