Description:This portable generator unit, No. 3, WD 1257 and the No.5 unit (on the right) are pictured near to the Queensville railway bridge which carries the A34 Lichfield Road over the West Coast Main Line at Stafford.

In the background on the left there is a glimpse of the Nelson Engineering Laboratories at the English Electric ‘Main Works’ in Stafford. The Nelson Engineering Laboratories were named after the Chairman and Managing Director of the Company, Sir George Nelson and they were officially opened on 5 November 1947 by the President of the Board of Trade, Mr Harold Wilson. The Stafford factory was renowned for its electrical products including generators, transformers and switchgear.

During the 1950s one of these generator units was based at Rugeley Power Station for several years. The construction of the first Power Station on the Rugeley site started in 1956 and this became Rugeley A Power Station which officially opened in 1963 and closed in 1996 and then demolished. Rugeley B Power Station opened in 1970 and closed during 2016.
