Description:The GPO (General Post office) telephone exchange in Stone. Seated at the front is Mrs Joan Ravenscroft. Joan was a telephonist from 1957 to 1967. The telephone exchange was over the Post Office in Granville Square. The exchange in Stone closed in 1967 when the area went over to STD (Subscribed Trunk Dialing). Many of the telephonists were transferred to the Stafford telephone exchange in Eastgate Street. All the single, two digit and three digit telephone numbers were changed to 4 digit numbers at the time of the transfer to the new exchange sited on the station approach in front of Stone Youth Club.The Stone telephone exchange and post office is now (2016) The Poste of Stone public house.
