Description:The Newcastle-under-Lyme to Stoke canal photographed a few yards from Clayton Lane Bridge.The Newcastle canal was a 4 mile level canal from the Trent & Mersey Canal at Stoke to Newcastle-under-Lyme.The canal was authorised by an Act of parliament 1795 and completed in about 1800. The canal was part closed and dammed at Trent Vale in 1921 and abandoned in 1935 and subsequently filled in. The Stoke-On-Trent Union workhouse can be seen in the distance, this is now the site of the Royal Stoke University Hospital.
