Description:The mantelpiece in the Long Gallery was considered to be one of the few outstanding remnants of Elizabethan times at Beaudesert. Following the 1909 fire in an adjacent part of the building, renovations were made to the Long Gallery and the mantelpiece was carefully restored to reveal the fine carving and inlay. In the centre panel of the mantelpiece is said to be a Holbein portrait of the founder of the family fortunes, Henry VIII’s Secretary of State, Sir William Paget. The old stone fire arch below was in a poor state and this new one was designed, carved and introduced. During the Sale by Auction of the interior and exterior fixtures and fittings, fabric of the Mansion and Stables held on 18 and 19 July 1935, the fireplace was listed as Lot 136 which fetched £15.00; the mantelpiece Lot 137 fetched £300.00.
