Description:California Mill in Horton Street is a very good example of the gradual concentration of the many processes in the silk industry onto one industrial site. Steam power was used here from at least 1839 so the water rights were crucial. The mill was acquired by William Stannard in the early 1880s and he used a house by the entrance to the mill as his home.

California Mill, has now been demolished to make way for a new two storey facility, which houses the training facilities for trainee engineers, carpenters, joiners and bricklayers, which form part of the Leek campus of Buxton and Leek College.
