Description:The Stone Co-operative Society was formed in 1875 with the opening of these premises in Radford Street. A 'Hygienic Steam Bakery' was also opened in Kings Avenue.

The Chairman of the Society was Alfred Allen, with Henry Ravenscroft as Secretary. The Manager for over twenty years was George Bailey, whose tomb in Christchurch was paid for by members of the Society.
