Description:The story of Clara Greensell taken from court, parish and workhouse records. The document above shows Clara was apprenticed to Thomas Wellings, innkeeper of the Crown in Codsall. In July 1835 a court order dismissed her because she was pregnant. Clara was 17. Her son was baptised a few weeks later at Codsall but died 7 December 1837 at the workhouse in Tettenhall. Clara was admitted to the workhouse several times, including with her baby, Harriet, in 1840 . Another son, also John, died in the workhouse in 1846 and Clara and her 9-day old son, Joseph, were buried at Codsall in 1848 . Clara died three days after giving birth at the age of just 31.
