Description:During World War II Air Raid Precaution warden’s had the job to protect civilians from the dangers of air-raids.

During blackouts they were responsible for ensuring no light was visible. They had basic fire-fighting and first aid training to help people until official rescue teams arrived. Their uniform was basic consisting of overalls, wellington boots, armband, a black steel helmet and a badge.

This helmet is an earlier example, as later in the war helmets were dark blue with a large white ‘W’ on the front.
