Description:For centuries firemen have worn helmets to protect themselves; the shape of the helmet has virtually stayed the same the but materials have drastically altered. This helmet is a more modern (at time of writing in 2015!) Staffordshire Fire and Rescue helmet made out of synthetic materials. Modern helmets also have a clear plastic cover to protect the face whereas previously the face was left unprotected. The colour of the helmet is significant. It indicates the position and rank. Most firefighter’s helmets in Britain are yellow, those of managers and sub-officers are white; rank is depicted by black stripes around the brim.
