Description:Pictured is the Motor Room at the Lorraine Escaut Plate Mill at Mont St Martin near Longwy in France.

In the foreground are English Electric double armature twin drive motors which were manufactured and tested in Stafford, with a combined rating RMS. 8000 H.P. 490 Volts at a base speed 35/90 r.p.m. 490 metre-ton cut out. Each Motor 2xCS24/11068.

Against the left wall is a Supervisory board, LTAC, ancillaries, contactor board and LC3000 regulator. Left centre: Ilgner Set. Motors 7000 H.P., continuous, 443 r.p.m., mean, 5250 Volts, 3 phase, 50 cycles, LS188/1412. Main Generators each, 1650 kW., 490 Volts, CS12/57.525. Flywheel 200,000 H.P. secs at 500 r.p.m. Immediate right of the Ilgner Set: Main and Control Exciter Sets. Right of the Exciter Sets: Westinghouse Sets and Control Gear for the Mill auxiliaries. Background: Le Material Electrique and Merlin & Gerin LT. Distribution and plate handling gear control.

The Stafford Works was renowned for its electrical products including generators, transformers and switchgear.

Additional information:
Siemens Brothers purchased the land in 1901 and built the factory and offices which were ready to start production in 1903. In 1918 Siemens merged with several companies, including Dick, Kerr and Co., to become the English Electric Co. Two years later in 1920, The English Electric Co bought the Stafford Works. The English Electric Co merged with GEC (The General Electric Company) during 1968 and the Lichfield Road Site became part of GEC Power Engineering Ltd. On 22 March 1989 became part of GEC ALSTHOM, an Anglo French Joint Venture. On 22 June 1998 became part of ALSTOM with global HQ in Paris and until June 2014 continued to be part of the ALSTOM Group.
