Date:1850 - 1890 (c.)
Description:Victorian children were dressed like miniature adults to a certain extent, for example girls’ skirts were shorter than adults. The skirt would gradually get longer as the girl aged, so when she was sixteen the skirt would be full length as she would be dressed like her mother and any adult female. Due to its overall size this dress was most probably for that of a young girl. Girls would have been required to wear underwear similar to an adult’s preparing them for adulthood, such as a chemise, drawers, stays (which was a softer version of the corset), stockings and at least two petticoats. Girl’s outfits did not become more comfortable until the end of the nineteenth century.
