Description:Photograph of Mrs H.M.Shaw. She was the wife of Ben Shaw, the old Uttoxeter Carnival King.

This photograph was taken in the late 1950s in her small shop in Carter Street, Uttoxeter which stood next to Willisford's. You could buy almost anything and she was one of the first H.M.V. record agents.

Note the Gillette razor blades at the back and the whistle hanging from the same hanger. She also sold model aircraft kits, balsa wood, catapult elastic, Webley air rifles and ammunition. She sold the Uttoxeter Advertiser which she posted to various customers. Farmers used to come in on a market day and bring their wireless accumulators to be charged and swapped for the ones that had been charged. She was also licensed to sell tobacco.

Tony Smith remembers her stocking the first model of a Biro pen. It was in a similar casing to a fountain pen and a Potteries Motor Transport bus driver bought it for £5, a great deal of money at the time.
