Description:McCann photographic print envelope, supplied for a Miss Payne Hall who was a travel agent for many years in Uttoxeter.

Born in 1897, Gerald was the third generation of McCann's photography buisness in Uttoxeter. He served in the London Scottish Regiment as a conscript during the First World War, serving in Europe and the Middle East. On his return he began photographing livestock, building on the business his father Alfred already carried out for Bagshaw’s auctioneers and the County agricultural shows.

Alfred died in 1943 and Gerald took over the family business, running the photography business, while his sister ran the tobacconists shop. His specialism was agriculture and livestock photograpy. Almost a century of McCann’s Photographers ended in 1966 when Gerald retired due to ill health, and he died in March 1970. The shop had been sold in 1968 and is now (2014) a travel agents.
