Description:Sam pictured in his Durham Light Infantry uniform, during World War 1, service number 80867. He was promoted to sergeant and posted to the Cannock Chase Training Camps after service in France, where he was awarded the military medal. He met his future wife, a Hednesford girl, while serving at the camp. After the warthey married they returned to live in Sam's home county of Yorkshire.
