Description:The Red Lion, on the left of this photograph, stands on Market Square and was originally built as a private house, probably for Thomas Joliffe, a wool merchant, in about 1607. The entrance to the Red Lion's stables is to the right, with a shop between. The shop and stable entrance were demolished to make way for the Butter Market, built in 1897.
