Description:For the Christmas shopping period in 1970 the Co-op Store opened their Christmas Grotto with the arrival of Santa and his Assistant by horse drawn carriage. The horse, driver and carriage came from an organisation in Wellington, Shropshire.

Santa and his Assistant (Susan from the Co-op’s Display Department) arrive in Stafford Street by the Princes Street Precinct adjacent to the Store. There is a glimpse of Santa between the carriage driver and his assistant. In the background on the right is the Eastern Carpet Stores.

The Co-op Department Store closed on Friday 26 April 2013.
