Description:This image of the Co-op’s “Fun Footwear for Summer” window display was taken using a Kodak transparency film.

The display featured giant sticks of seaside rock. The ‘rock’ was made from large cardboard tubes painted in various colours and wrapped in cellophane. Over the years these tubes were recycled and used in various other displays, including being transformed into giant pencils for a Back to School promotion. Mr Ray Fowler was the Display manager.

On the right in the reflection of the windows is Crabbery Street with a glimpse of a shop in nearby Gaolgate Street. This was the W. T. Jeff’s store which sold curtain and dress fabrics on the ground floor, ladies wear on the first floor and carpets in the basement. The building is currently occupied (October 2013) by a branch of Thomas Cook, Travel Agents.

The Co-op Department Store closed on Friday 26 April 2013.
