Description:This octagonal privy building was situated and served properties behind shops and businesses at 23-29 High Street in Upper Tean.
This photograph was taken during demolition in the 1980s. It shows the entrance to the central chamber where the waste from the privies surrounding it ran into. It was then emptied by night soil men with horse and cart. Another similar building, also demolished, stood behind houses in Old Road. They were built at the rear of weavers' cottages by J. & N. Phillips in the late 18th or early 19th centuries.
