Date:1918

Description:A postcard view entitled 'A happy day on the Downsbank, Stone', published by A.W. Tilley of Stone. A handwritten note on the reverse has the date September 5th, 1918. This view shows a group on the west bank of the stream, and the old quarry workings seen on the left are largely hidden by trees and undergrowth.

In 1946 Joule's purchased the land from Viscount Sidmouth. It was presented to the National Trust on 22 July 1950 'as a thank offering for victory in the 1939 - 45 War and as a memorial to those who died there'.
