Date:1834 - 1864 (c.)

Description:An old lead fire mark found by the Parrott family on an outside wall of old Barnfields Farmhouse. The Birmingham Fire Mark shows the figure of a fireman in front of a fire engine with a water bucket on the left. He is wearing a helmet and holding an axe with a long handle in his right hand.

Until the early 19th century most organised fire fighting was carried out by private fire brigades belonging to insurance companies. Policy holders would display a fire mark on their buidling to ensure that the brigade would fight the fire. The Birmingham District insurance company existed between 1834 and 1864.
