Description:Oliver & Sons, flint grinders, were established around 1882 and operated from Longport Mills on Liverpool Road (now Westport Road).
In 1908 they moved to their new Newport Lane works, built on the canal wharf. Their calcining kilns, which still stand, were last fired in about 1964.
This photograph is believed to have been taken at Longport Mills, and shows a group workers in a workshop. The overalls of the men on the right are white with flint dust - a dangerous substance.
The flints were burned in calcining kilns and then ground. Finely ground flints are added by pottery manufactures to their clays to provide strength and whiteness to the finished pottery.
