Description:George Leveson-Gower, 1st Earl Granville (1758-1833)of Trentham. He was also known as Viscount Trentham 1758-1786, as Earl Gower 1786- 1803 and as 2nd Marquess of Stafford 1803-1833. He was created Duke of Sutherland in January 1833, six months before his death. In his political career he was Member of Parliament for Newcastle under Lyme 1779-1784 and for Staffordshire 1787-1799, and was British Ambassador to France 1790-1792. He was the eldest son of Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Marquess of Stafford. His vast estates and interests in industy meant he was probably the wealthiest man in 19th century Britain. He is also known for his contraversial role in the Highland Clearances, which took place between 1811 and 1820. Engraving by H. Meyer after a drawing by J.
