Description:David Garrick (1717-1779), actor-manager and dramatist, was born in Hereford but moved with his mother to Lichfield shortly afterwards. he was educated at Lichfield Grammar School and then attended Dr. Samuel Johnson's school at Edial. In 1737 he set off for London in the company of Dr. Johnson. He bacame a hugely famous actor, and managed the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane until his retirement in 1776.
There is a monument to him in Lichfield Cathedral, and the Garrick Theatres in Lichfield and London are named in his memory.
