Description:James Scott, Duke of Monmouth (1649-1685) was the natural son of King Charles II (1630-1685) and was created Duke of Monmouth in 1662. He married Anne, Countess of Buccleuch (1651-1731/2) in 1663. Having become the 'Protestant Hero' in 1685 on the death of King Charles II, he challenged his uncle James as a popish usurper of the English throne. He was beaten at the Battle of Sedgemoor and beheaded on Tower Hill. He was Lord Lieutenant of Staffordshire 1677-1779, and Custos Rotolorum of Staffordshire ('Keeper of the Rolls', or county records) 1678-1680.

A mezzotint engraving by William Baillie from a painting by Netcher and Wyke.
