Description:Tutbury Castle is first mentioned in 1071, when it was transferred to Henry de Ferrers from Hugh d’Avranches. The original motte and bailey castle had probably been built around two years earlier, following a rebellion in the Midlands against the newly established Norman King, William I (1066-87). The castle was the chief seat of the de Ferrers family, and later a major castle of the Earls and Dukes of Lancaster.
