Date:January 1928

Description:On 15 January, 1928, the bank carrying the railway line between Rugeley Town railway station and its junction with the main line at the Trent Valley station collapsed at the bridge over the Trent & Mersey Canal, between Love Lane and King Street. Damage had been noticed the previous day and a repair gang worked throughout the day and declared it safe for traffic. The only train scheduled passed over it at 11.00 am on Sunday morning. Shortly afterwards it was noticed that renewed subsidence was taking place but before any remedial repairs could take place a large portion on the east side collapsed together with part of the supporting arch, completely blocking the canal below. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
