Description:Taken in 1920 this photograph shows the Ironmarket in Newcastle-under-Lyme. The busy street is awash with transport, from the old fashioned handcart on the right of the picture to the cars parked by the kerb on the left. The tram lines run along the centre of the road and a tram can be seen coming up behind a bus in this scene. The competition from the new bus service in the town quickly proved too much for the trams. The Ironmarket is lined with various shops on both sides and the Municipal Hall can be seen on the left of the picture rising up above the shops at the far end of the road.
