Description:Dan O’Connell remembers

"I spent my first years in this house, leaving in 1948 at the age of 4. We were tenants. This view is of our front door. I remember my father pinning rabbit skins to a board next to the door during harvest period, and then turning them into slippers. We had no running water, Elsan chemical toilets, and the other end of the house was occupied by the farmer, Dan Marsden, his wife Marion, and Stuart their son about my age. There were 11 stone stairs inside, and beehives in the garden. I do not remember it being thatched. On the other side (back, from this perspective) was the farm yard including a slurry pit, into which I jumped one day as the result of a “dare” with Stuart. The thrashing machine was a big event and I remember being as tall as the horses knees! The rat catcher came too, and I was encouraged to hit the escaping rats with a stick. Also on the other side was a smoke room full of pork sides hanging. This was where the doctor gave us vaccinations. Remember these are the memories of someone who was less than four at the time. I believe the whole farmhouse was sold in the 1990s"
