Description:A Single furrow horse plough with disc coulter manufactured by Ransomes Sims & Jeffries Ltd. Ploughs are used to prepare the soil for planting crops. They lift and loosen the soil ready for seeds to be sown. Ransomes produced a range of cast or wrought iron frames which could be fitted with a variety of components, so that a farmer could 'pick and mix' a plough to suit any particular field, soil type or crop. This particular plough has an unusual disc coulter, and was used in the Stafford area.

Robert Ransome founded a plough-making company in 1789. He had originally been an ironmonger in Norwich before moving to Ipswich in Suffolk. From 1803 the company began filing patents for ploughs and quickly became one of the leading manufacturers of ploughs in the country. From the 1830s they began expanding their range of agricultural equipment and also became pioneers in the use of steam engines in agriculture.

This object is now part of the Staffordshire County Museum collection, and was restored in 2007 with the assistance of MLA West Midlands' Supporting Stewardship grant.
