Date:1900 - 1920 (c.)

Description:A horse-drawn single furrow balance or 'turnwrest' plough, manufactured by Davey Sleep and Co. Ltd., Plymouth, Devon. The balance plough was designed to reduce the amount of space needed to turn round. The body of the plough was tipped over using the pivot and the next furrow could begin to be ploughed. The company Davey Sleep was founded in the 1860s and became Davey Sleep and Co. Ltd. in 1895. They became renowned for their ploughs, and in particular for their balance ploughs which were very effective on hilly terrain.

This plough was used at Cannock Mill Farm, Cannock, Staffordshire and was supplied by F.H. Burgess, Agricultural Engineers and Suppliers.

This object is now part of the Staffordshire County Museum collection, and was restored in 2007 with the assistance of MLA West Midlands' Supporting Stewardship grant.

Dimensions: length 2950mm, width 710mm.
