Description:An early example of a motor bike.

This single-cylinder bike would have been started by using the pedal and chain. Manufactured in 1914, 4hp Triumph motorcycle was most probably the personal property of its rider, proudly dressed in military uniform. Possibly he was taking part in manoeuvres, but, given the year, the photograph may well have been taken just prior to departure for Despatch Rider (DR) duties in the Great War. It has v-belt transmission from the engine to rear wheel, then a choice of three speeds via a Sturmey-Archer gear, built into the wheel hub - a more robust version of the same makers’ familiar pedal cycle gear.
